EASTBOURNE — Eastbourne town centre was plunged into an unprecedented period of uncertainty this week after residents reported the shocking discovery that, for several minutes, there appeared to be no roadworks taking place anywhere.

The incident, which lasted an estimated six minutes, is believed to have caught both residents and council officials completely off guard.

One local resident said they initially thought they had taken a wrong turn.

“I was walking through town and suddenly realised there wasn't a diversion, temporary barrier or man in a hi-vis jacket standing around looking at a hole.

“I genuinely didn't know what to do.”

Council officials are understood to have been alerted shortly afterwards and immediately began assessing the situation.

A fictional council spokesperson told The Seagull Times: “We take this matter extremely seriously.

“Eastbourne has a proud history of maintaining a carefully balanced ecosystem of roadworks, temporary traffic restrictions and people asking on Facebook why nobody is working on them.

“To suddenly have none of these things was deeply alarming.”

Residents were reportedly encouraged to remain indoors while officials investigated.

The council is believed to have deployed a specialist team to search Terminus Road for any signs of unfinished work.

“We found some paving that looked slightly different,” the spokesperson said.

“Unfortunately, it turned out to be paving.”

The brief return to normality also caused confusion among motorists, with several drivers reportedly slowing down after discovering they could actually see the road ahead.

One driver said: “I didn't trust it. There must have been roadworks somewhere. There always are.”

Meanwhile, local businesses are said to have expressed concern that customers might become accustomed to being able to walk through the town centre without navigating around barriers.

“It would set a dangerous precedent,” one fictional shopkeeper said.

“What happens next? People start expecting pavements to be finished?”

The council has now reportedly begun preparations for a new emergency roadworks scheme, with early suggestions including replacing several perfectly functional slabs, digging up a section of pavement that nobody had noticed before and putting up a temporary traffic light “just in case”.

Officials have also refused to rule out the possibility of installing additional bollards.

By Friday afternoon, normal service had reportedly resumed, with residents once again enjoying the reassuring sight of cones, barriers and roadworks.

The council confirmed that the town centre was now “back to its usual level of inconvenience”.

Residents have been advised to remain vigilant.

A spokesperson added: “If you see an area of Eastbourne without roadworks, please report it immediately.

“It could be serious.”
