EAST SUSSEX — A Hastings man has successfully travelled to Eastbourne without carrying his passport despite friends warning him that attempting the journey without appropriate documentation was "asking for trouble."

The 43-year-old began preparations several days before leaving.

He checked his tyres.

Packed water.

Downloaded offline maps.

And informed relatives of his planned route.

His mother remained concerned.

"Eastbourne's a long way," she said.

"It's seventeen miles, Mum."

"Exactly."

Bexhill Crossing Successfully Completed

The most dangerous stage of the expedition was expected to involve travelling through Bexhill.

The town sits strategically between Hastings and Eastbourne and has repeatedly refused to become involved in their rivalry.

The traveller crossed without incident.

"I stopped for a coffee."

"Nice actually."

This statement has caused controversy in Hastings.

He has since clarified that the coffee was "fine."

Cultural Differences Immediately Apparent

Upon entering Eastbourne, the Hastings resident noticed several significant differences.

The seafront appeared suspiciously tidy.

The cliffs were in a different place.

And residents seemed unusually proud of their flowerbeds.

"I knew I wasn't in Hastings anymore."

He also encountered Eastbourne Pier.

He photographed it.

Friends later questioned why.

"Just evidence I'd made it."

Locals Detect Outsider

Despite attempting to blend in, Eastbourne residents quickly identified the visitor.

One asked where he was from.

"Hastings."

There was a brief pause.

"Oh."

The conversation continued normally.

The traveller described this as "surprisingly civil."

Another Eastbourne resident even provided directions.

"I thought there'd be more hostility."

There wasn't.

This was slightly disappointing.

Emergency Supplies Unnecessary

The Hastings man had packed enough food for approximately two days.

He consumed none of it.

Eastbourne reportedly contains shops.

This discovery surprised nobody except his mother.

He also carried a portable battery, first-aid kit and emergency blanket.

The entire journey took under an hour.

"I may have overprepared."

Return Journey Considered

After several hours exploring Eastbourne, the visitor decided he actually quite liked it.

He immediately asked that this information remain off the record.

Unfortunately, Derek Pebbles had already written it down.

"It's different to Hastings."

"But that's not necessarily bad."

This represents a significant diplomatic breakthrough between the towns.

Eastbourne residents have responded cautiously.

One admitted Hastings was "quite nice in places."

Negotiations are progressing.

Safe Return Confirmed

The traveller returned to Hastings later that evening.

Friends gathered to hear about his experience.

"What was it like?"

"Eastbourne."

They nodded knowingly.

His mother was simply relieved he had returned safely.

At the time of publication, the man was considering another expedition next month.

Potential destinations include Lewes.

His family have urged him not to get carried away.
